Helyx FL Chapter | Jumpstart AP Program | AP Biology

    Welcome!

This course, created by the Florida chapter of the Helyx Initiative, is a 4-week accelerated AP Biology class which will cover the essentials and give you a rundown of the whole course.

Instructors: Shriya Buragadda, Aidan Meyers, Thomas Neumann, Mrunmayi Joshi

Office Hours: This is the time to ask questions about the content and get help. During live sessions, we will also be doing cool reviews, such as Kahoot. Schedule an appointment with any of the instructors, by (1) emailing us, (2) direct messaging us through Discord, (3) or mentioning the biology helper role in #office-hour-requests. We can help at any time in this method. Office hours will begin Week 2 and happen twice a week, so please fill out this form so that we can set a time and day that works best for everyone: https://forms.gle/u3eHLk1y5zgtzHEy8

    Course Description & Calendar

This is an accelerated crash course for the College Board AP Biology Cuirriculum and Exam. In four weeks we will be covering all eight units of the AP Biology Course. Biology is the study of life, and with that hefty title we’ll recognize that is is an incredibly diverse and expansive field with implications in many other subjects.

    Week Units

    Week 1

Unit 0: Introduction to AP Biology

Unit 1: The Chemistry of Life

Unit 2: Cell Structure & Function

    Week 2

    Unit 3: Cellular Energetics

Unit 4: Cell Communication and cell Cycle

    Week 3

    Unit 5: Heredity

Unit 6: Gene Expression and Regulation

    Week 4

    Unit 7: Evolution

    Unit 8: Ecology

Lectures and notes will be uploaded throughout the week along with practice assignments/quizzes when applicable. For pertinent questions, feel free to attend office hours or expect a response to email and messaged questions within 24-48 hrs.

No. Assignments and practice questions are just that- practice. Everything in these courses is optional, based on how much you want to learn and prepare yourself. We highly recommend that you do them as the questions are sample questions which you could see again throughout the year and the assignments will help you practice applying the concepts you have learned.
No, this course will not give you credit at any school or institution. Our "grading" is more of a feedback and help-based system, we want you to learn and grow, not be given a letter grade like in school!

Welcome to Week 1 of AP Biology for the Jumpstart AP program! This week we will be covering Units 0, 1, and 2. For each unit, there is 1 lecture video and 1 associated worksheet or quiz. Some units are split into 2 parts to make the content more digestible, so they have 2 assignments. Make sure you read the info in the description and FAQ tabs before beginning the course. Please watch the lecture videos because the slides don’t explain the content themselves!

Additionally, office hours will begin during Week 2 of the program. For now, fill out this form so that we know when to host office hours: https://forms.gle/w4vfw51FooQeBZ5u6 . They will likely occur twice a week, and we will do enrichment activities and answer questions you may have about the content or assignments. Feel free to contact me or any of the other instructors on Discord if you have any doubts. Please let one of us know if there are any issues with the course or material! If Lightning Learning is giving you problems, you may contact Joe (in the FL Helyx Discord server).

New content will be uploaded at the beginning of each week to keep you on pace. Try not to fall behind so that office hours are more relevant for you.

We want you to learn as much as possible during these 4 weeks and give you a solid introduction/overview of the course. There is no “grading,” we are more focused on giving feedback and tips. Have fun!
